What I Learned On My Fitness Journey

Apr 30, 2019

I have struggled with body image for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was very thin, which isn't considered attractive in the Latino community. My childhood and teenage years consisted of pointed remarks about being too thin and recommendations for weight gainers.

I stayed fairly thin into my adulthood until a few years after I had Jeremy. I gained a lot of weight, about 25 pounds, in the span of a few months. While I was not overweight, I was carrying a large amount of fo body fat. Plus, I was always feeling sluggish and depressed. I started looking into solutions into losing the weight. But what would happen is, I would lose the weight and gain it right back. I would try the fad teas, the "miracle" workouts, just to gain it right back. About two years ago, I decided to take my fitness more seriously. I give my best effort towards my job, parenting and other endeavours, why should my body be any different? The most important part of a healthier lifestyle, is consistency and effort. Below are some of the most important things I learned during my fitness journey.

1. The Numbers Don't Mean S**t After A While
When I first started working out, I was HYPE when the pounds started melting off. But then, I realized that the numbers were remaining the same. And then I started gaining weight! I started getting discouraged until I saw that my clothes were fitting me and/or feeling looser. I was gaining muscle! So, I know now not to go crazy over the scale, I pay more attention to inches lost and how my clothes feel. In the photos above, there's only a 3-pound difference between them.

2. You Appreciate Your Body More
I had al these sorts of aspirations for when I began to work out. I was going to be out here with a six pack and all that. Truth is, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. And while I still don't have a six pack (yet), I celebrate the other milestones. Such as being able to do pushups or being able to run a mile without passing out. And at the end of the day, this is the body that gets me through the day. It brought life to this world. And for that, I learned to be kinder to it.

3. Exercising Keeps Depression At Bay
It takes 21 days to break a habit. After a couple of weeks of healthy eating and exercising, I noticed my energy levels went up. I didn't have to drag myself out of bed every day. Then, one day I realized, it has been months since I felt depressed. The anxiety levels were low. While I do get little bouts of depression now and then, I have something to combat it. The gym keeps me busy and provides goals for me to focus on. I also cut back on eating sugar because I noticed that it helps with depression

4. You Change Inside & Out
Besides making dealing with depression either, I was also making other positive changes. I felt more confident. Like I could kick some serious ass if the opportunity ever presented itself (I have weird daydreams, sue me). I felt better about the clothes I was wearing, which as a clotheshorse and blogger is very important to me. My skin was clearer and my energy levels were consistently high.

The point of this post wasn't to be all preachy. I just wanted to share how this was a real journey for me. It had ups and downs, and moments where I wanted to give up because I wasn't seeing the results. My journey hasn't ended, it continues as I become a bit better every day.

Please forgive me, I know it has been a long time since I last posted. A lot has been going on, making it quite difficult for me to create new content and post frequently. I decided to go back to school, and with that and a tricky work schedule AND being a single mom, it was quite challenging. Luckily things have become less hectic and I can devote some time for the blog.

I did have a brief depression spell that was quickly eradicated. I was surrounded by a lot of negative energy that wasn't helping me at all. Luckily, I was able to remove myself from situations that were doing nothing but harm to my mental health. I am happy to say that things are looking a lot better. Despite all the madness, I was able to make the President's List at school (yay!).

I am excited to post more frequently. I have already started planning content and I am really excited to share with you all. Thank you for those who continue to visit Havtastic.

Helloo lovelies!

I apologize for not updating but I do have HUGE haul post that I will be posting, I have just been waiting on all the items. I will also be doing some Valentine's Day looks, I can not promise that they will be accompanied by video tutorials though. I will try to find some time to film. I just wanted to share some updates with you on what's been going on with me.

So what's new with me?

1. I am a pescatarian, which means that I eat no meat except for fish. I have always wanted to be a vegetarian but I just couldn't give up chicken. I was never too crazy about red meat. So I decided to do it by becoming a pescatarian then making the transition to vegetarianism. So far, it hasn't been too hard. I have been making sure that I am getting all the proper nutrients so I won't be suffering from any deficiencies. I have been meat-free for 2 weeks now. I still crave some chicken sometimes haha.

2. I have been doing more freelance work as a MUA. I am so grateful for the people that have been giving me the opportunity to work with them. I will be updating my portfolio so stay tuned!

3. Jeremy is coming back! He was gone for a month and a half. He was on vacation with my mom to DR. It was nice having a break but I have been missing him like crazy! He's coming back tomorrow and I cannot wait to see my little guy <3.

And that's pretty much it. I will be back to blogging about makeup and fashion this week. Keep an out fot Spring trends :).

I'm always dyeing my hair sporadically. My hair color usually reflects the mood I'm in for that moment. I decided to go dark for Fall/Winter and I chose a dark chocolate brown, which is the color I had for last Winter. In a couple of months, I'll re-dye it and mix with a different color to add more tones and depth. I do all my hair dyeing myself since I usually stay in the brunette family and I don't do anything too complicated. I also do my own highlights, including the ones I had before my current hair color. I don't trust salons after I was left with orange hair this one time.

When I dye my hair, I don't buy the box dyes. I buy the color and developer separately. It comes out cheaper and I also like it because I can mix shades to create my own custom color and I can control the developer level as well. The dyes are the same formula as box dyes, you just have more color choices and you can choose to mix them with a higher level developer. However, I don't recommend doing this unless you have some hair coloring knowledge or speaking with someone that's a hair color expert.

That was the same brand of dye and developer I used for my current color. Except that I used three bottles because I have a lot of hair and it's long as well. I used level 20 developer this time because I was going darker. This was my hair color before:

And this is my hair color now:

I also went to the salon afterwards and trimmed my hair and added layers, which is why it looks shorter in the front. I do several things to maintain my hair so that it could be healthy and not lose it's shine. I did a haircare regimen post a few months ago, you can go HERE to read it.

The Mysterious Bracelet + Awesome News!

Dec 1, 2010

So I have gotten a couple of e-mails from people asking me about the threaded bracelet that I am always wearing. So I decided to do a post on it. In a way it's kind of like a friendship bracelet. This one has a small cross weaved into one of the ends. The person that buys you the bracelet is supposed to put it on you so you can be blessed. They can choose to bless you with whatever they want: love, joy, health, etc.  My sister got this one for me so she blessed me. I guess she blessed me generally because she didn't specify lol. I'm so used to wearing it that sometimes I even forget that I have it on! So, this is the story behind the bracelet.

And...

My AWESOME news is that I bought my domain! So my blog is now officially abeautywithbrains.com! So exciting! This site will be getting  whole new makeover to go with it's new name so stay tuned for that!

Jeremy's 2nd Birthday

Apr 25, 2010

My son Jeremy turned 2 on April 20th and I threw him a little birthday party yesterday. His theme was Curious George, he loves the show and you can't help but love the little monkey.

I couldn't add my watermark to my images since I'm blogging from my sister's laptop. Grrr.
