How To Make The Winter More Bearable

Dec 6, 2014

There’s no denying that, for those who live in one half of the globe at least winter is well and truly on its way. We can kiss goodbye to those long, hot lazy days of summer and say hello to cold weather, rain, snow, dark nights, even darker mornings and frostbite.

Don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom. Some people actually enjoy the winter months and find it a welcome relief after being so hot and bothered through the hottest months of July and August. It’s a time for hibernation, sitting by the fire with a cup of steaming cocoa and watching movies.

Here are just a few of my favorite things which all help to make the winter more bearable.

• Central heating – where would we be without it. It may be expensive, unhealthy and bad for the environment but there’s nothing quite like walking in from a hard day at work to a house which is lovely and warm thanks to the central heating kicking in a half hour before. It’s much better than being greeted by a house which is so cold you can see your breath and you have to light the fire and give it an hour before you can even unwrap from your hat and scarf.

• Christmas – I’m not sure who planned it but well done – Christmas in the northern hemisphere comes slap bang in the middle of winter giving everybody something to look forward to mid-term. It gives a focus, a happy time for families to get together and enjoy a delicious meal, exchange gifts and sing a few songs.  Yep, I think having Christmas in the middle of winter was an excellent idea.

• Hot showers – in the summer cool showers are the order of the day but there’s nothing quite like stepping into a steaming hot shower on a cold winters day, particularly if your towels are all warm and toasty when you step out again. Towel warmers are a fabulous invention don’t you think – not just in a private bathroom but also hair salons and beauty salons. There’s something really luxurious about a lovely warm towel. Check out the warmers at The Salon Outlet if you want to know what I mean.

• Freezing cold yet sunny days when the earth is crispy and crunchy, you can wrap up in your snuggly coats, hats and scarves and enjoy a refreshing walk which really puts the color back into your cheeks after being holed up inside for days on end.  I love those crisp, fresh mornings don’t you?

• Home-made soup – you can enjoy home-made soup at any time of the year, some people even make refreshing cold soups in the summer time although I’ve never quite got to grips with that one. What I do love, however, is a bowl of steaming home-made soup or even stew in the winter time with a hunk of fresh, crusty bread. Winter is the perfect time to make batches of home-made soup bursting with all of the vegetable goodness we are told to eat in abundance – it’s easy with a tasty soup. It’s easy to get your “five a day” with a veggie soup in the winter and delicious salads in the summer time.
